Cotton farmers suffer damages due to cyclone Nivar

Some of the farmers said that the crops were discoloured and hence unusable, others said the cyclone caused a delay in procurement, drenching cotton bales in the market yard itself.

Officials have said 1,000 cubic metres per second or cusecs of water will be released from Chembarambakkam reservoir on Wednesday afternoon and that families living along the Adyar River, which is linked to the reservoir, have been asked to be vigilant.

The depression lay centered about 520km east-southeast of Puducherry and 560km south-east of Chennai on Monday. It is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during next the 24 hours, M Mohapatra, director general, India Meteorological Department (IMD), said.
