First built upon by Indian dynasties stretching back to the Satavahana Empire around the first century BC, the fortified Lohagad -- meaning Iron Fort -- is based on a flat-top hill in India's Western Ghats mountain range and was still in use by successive empires up until the 1800s. The fort is a popular destination for hikers during the monsoon season when heavy rains brings out fresh foliage in the region. / AFP PHOTO / Alex OGLE (AFP)
