Destination wedding: First couple to get married in British Antarctic Territory

The couple had been in a relationship for 11 years and their marriage celebrations took place with 20 people attending.

Polar field guides Julie Baum and Tom Sylvester got married on 15th July at the British Antarctic Survey’s (BAS) Rothera Research Station. This was the first official wedding which took place in the British Antarctic Territory (BAT).

Julie and Tom have been together for 11 years, and their marriage celebrations took place over two days with 20 people attending. The festivities began with a champagne breakfast, which helped lighten the atmosphere for the team that is surviving in freezing conditions. Julie and Tom are skilled mountaineers who work as mountain instructors and have been engaged for the last three years. With the help of some of her friends at the station, Julie made her wedding dress. After the ceremony which was held at noon, the newlywed couple clicked photos outside which had a temperature of -9 degrees centigrade. Post that they sped off in their wedding vehicle, a sno-cat.

BAT is a sector of Antarctica which the United Kingdom had claimed as one of its 14 British Overseas Territories. The southern part of the territory was named Queen Elizabeth Land in 2012. The area does not have any native inhabitants and comprises the research and support teams of the British Antarctic Survey and various other organizations.
