Choreographer Terence Lewis’s contemporary dance act is back with added twists

Contemporary dance involves a lot of complicated moves, and choreographer Terence Lewis knows this only too well.

Lewis returned to theatre with Scrambled Eggs in May this year, after a 10-year hiatus, and the production opened to a full house. However, with no shows after the premiere, Scrambled Eggs will be performed for the second time on November 21, as part of NCPA’s Contemporary Dance season.

The choreographer explains that the production is back in a revamped avatar. “The opening of the show was phenomenal, but we couldn’t perform as I was occupied with other commitments. I had several international tours and other projects, and since the act features me in the lead role, we couldn’t have another show after May,” says Lewis.

Besides date issues, there were other reasons for the interruption as well. “There are various logistics that need to be worked out while putting up a show. We need to publicise it, book the auditorium and sell tickets. It’s hard to work out the details, so I’m glad the festival invited us and made these arrangements,” he says.

Though it was initially a dance theatre act, the focus was majorly on dancing during the first recital. The show is expected to be very different this time. “We had received a lot of feedback about our shortfalls. We’ve incorporated sound and visual effects. The act will be more interactive — I’ll make the audience dance and teach them new dance moves too,” says Lewis.

Another change has been introduced to the theatrical portion of the act. “Quasar Padamsee has joined us and is looking after the theatre part. I’ll be directing the dance bits,” adds Lewis.
