Dancing Queen, that’s a rather surprising choice..

Why? It’s about the magic of Bollywood-style dancing and since I’m a part of Hindi cinema, I think I can judge the show.

But you’re a Bharata Natyam dancer too. One would have thought you would want to be associated with a show on classical dance.
I’d have loved that. I’d even suggested it to several producers but no one was interested. Then this offer came along. Now I’ll have to distance myself from my classical training when I’m sitting on that chair.

What about a sequel to your TV serial Nupur?
(Sighs) That would have been wonderful. Nupur wasn’t only about dance, it had a beautiful story too, written by Gulzar saab. I wanted to make Nupur 2 but again, no one was interested.

On Dancing Queen, you will be evaluating the moves of item girls like Sambhavna Seth and Mink Singh. What’s your take on such seeti bajao numbers?
Believe me it’s a tough act. Being an item girl in Bollywood is not easy. You have to be graceful and dignified. I’ll keep that in mind when I decide on my scores.

There have been several dance reality shows like Nach Baliye, Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa, Boogie Woogie..
(Cuts in) Boogie Woogie, I’ve seen that one. They had some very talented children on the show. Amazing dancers!

Will you shake a leg on Dancing Queen?
(Laughs) No dancing, I’m the judge.

What about your co-judge Jeetendra.. we saw him take the floor during Jhalak..?
(Smiles) Oh, he’s ready to start dancing, any time.

We saw you in a cameo in Sapna Baabul ka Bidaai. If Ekta Kapoor were to make you an offer, would you act in one of her soaps?
No, no dailies for me, time kahan hai.

Are you planning to get into politics full time?
I want to help people move ahead in life.

In the recent elections, BJP suffered a shock defeat in Rajasthan..
(Interrupts) But it won in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh by huge margins. Why aren’t you talking about that? Winning and losing are a part of life.

I mentioned Rajasthan because Dharmendra contested from there and you’ve campaigned for the party there. Also, you are doing a film with Vinod Khanna in which you are playing Rajmata Vijayraje Scindia.
Yes, Ek Thi Rani Aisi Bhi. It’s such a privilege. I’m so comfortable playing the Maharani of Gwalior. I guess the role suits me. At the film’s mahurat on October 14, the former CM of Rajasthan, Vasundhra Raje Scindia, touched your feet. Today, she’s out. She’ll be back. It’s just a matter of time.

Why aren’t you signing more films?
Dharmendra wants to pair up with you again, Amitabh Bachchan is keen to recreate the magic of Baghban and Baabul. And now Jeetuji too may want screen time. (Smiling) Dharamji, Amitji, Jeetuji, I’ve had some really great co-stars. I would be only too happy to make more movies with them. But we need good stories like Baghban, appropriate for our age.

You were to produce a film featuring your daughter Esha, to be directed by Revathy?
That’s not happening.

There was also a film with Esha and Kush, Shatrughan Sinha’s son?
That’s happening but Zee’s making it. Esha was approached and she’s doing the film.

What about Ahana? Buzz is that she wants to be a director.
Yes. Once something concrete takes shape, we’ll make an announcement.

What did you gift Dharamji on his 73rd birthday last Monday?
(Laughs) Lots of paranthas.
