Wednesday was the most pleasant morning for the employees of Star Plus. The channel finally over took rival Colors by 14 points. That makes it Star Plus the No 1 Hindi entertainment channel this week. It was the same weekend last year when Colors became the No 1 Hindi entertainment channel, beating Star Plus and Zee TV by miles of points.
However, a year after, Colors was down to 286 points and Star Plus touched the 300 points mark, as per reports from TAM India, the official agency to issue the ratings recorded for TV channels across the country. But the question that first comes to mind is that if the channel will be able to sustain the No 1 spot for multiple weeks, given that in October 2009, Zee TV had also beaten Colors on the TRP scale.
When asked, Anupam Vasudev, executive vice president, Marketing, Star India, he says, “We do not think that leadership is a weekly game. We are committed to consistently creating great content. We are happy that Star Plus viewers have lapped up our shows like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai. Even our new shows like Pratigya, Behnein and Sasural Genda Phool, in competitive slots, are getting great audience responses. The ratings reflect just that.”
Wonder how the channel plans to sustain the ratings of their driver shows like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (7.1) and Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai (6.9) now? Rajan Shahi, the producer-director of the shows, says that the channel has been cooperative and doesn’t plan to hinder the flow of the story in these shows. “They never asked me to make unnecessary changes to the storyline or introduce characters to fetch high TRPs. I think their consistency has fetched them the top spot and hopefully they will continue,” he adds.
According to the Colors’ spokesperson, the domain is dynamic, comprising strong and established brands. “We have been in the leadership position over the last 22 weeks at a stretch. However, the gap between each of the top three players has been within reach. And going forward, it is likely to stay like that for some time. We shall continue to strengthen our position and hopefully increase our gap with our competitors, over time,” adds the spokesperson.
Sapna Babul Ka - Bidaai 9 pm,
