After the Supreme Court announced a ban on the Bharat Stage (BS) III vehicles from April 1, thousands of people rushed to automobile showrooms in Bhopal on Friday, as the dealers provided huge discounts to clear their stock BS-III compliant vehicles. The showrooms offered discounts of up to Rs. 25,000 on two wheelers but many people had to go back disheartened as most of the dealerships ran out of stock. The apex court on Wednesday stated that the BS-III vehicles could aggravate the menace of pollution in the country and banned the sale and registration of the vehicles. Between 1.5 and 1.8 million two-wheelers are sold every day, translating into an average of 50,000 sales daily.
