Crumbling sugar mills of Gorakhpur
Updated on May 19, 2007 09:47 pm IST
Gorakhpur incurred a loss of over 440 million rupees to crumbling sugar mills, built in pre-independent era. Four state-run sugar mills were shut down and seven are in deplorable conditions, due to outdated machinery. Most of the mills were set up during the British colonial India and have not been renovated since then. The mills were giving negative margins and were not even able to recover the cost of inputs for last several years.
