Locals in Meghalaya oppose proposed Uranium mining

The state government of Meghalaya's decision to lease out 422 hectares of land in West Khasi Hills region for 30 years to the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) for the pre-project developmental works has evoked sharp reactions from the locals.According to activists from various NGOs, Meghalaya's environment has been destroyed for years through unscientific mining of coal,limestone and other natural resources.
