Fire breaks out at AIIMS Delhi: Covid lab gutted, no injuries reported

- A fire broke out on the ninth floor of AIIMS Delhi late on Wednesday night. Officials said at least 26 fire tenders were rushed to the hospital after the alert. The firefighting operation was brought under control by 12:39 am on Thursday. Officials added that no casualties were reported due to the blaze. According to the officials, the cause of the fire has not been ascertained yet. Officials informed that the area where the fire occurred was used for Covid sampling. Damage to the samples of Covid housed on the floor was not immediately clear. Officials said the fire control room received a distress call about the fire at 10.25 pm. A fire officer said the blaze started at an office in the convergence block within the campus. Site of the fire outbreak is reportedly away from patients admitted to the hospital. The convergence block is where the classes are held, it also houses laboratories. This comes two days before AIIMS Delhi is set to resume OPD services in a phased manner. OPD is set to resume services almost two months after they were suspended in view of Covid.
