- After India surpassed the United Kingdom to become the fifth largest economy in the world, Prime Minister Modi said achieving this spot is special as we have left behind those who ruled over us for 250 years. Interacting with national teacher award winners, PM hailed the country for breaking out of the shackles of slavery. He said, India needs to only move forward now. According to figures from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), India climbed to the fifth spot in the last quarter of 2021. The United States, China, Japan, and Germany are the only nations with economies larger than India's. The UK is currently in sixth place, just behind India.
