BJD MP Amar Patnaik has written to Defence minister Rajnath Singh urging the government to advance the phasing out plan for MiG-21s - at the centre of a debate over how safe the planes are - and retire the ageing aircraft in the Indian Air Force combat fleet at the earliest. The BJD lawmaker’s demand comes on the back of a fatal crash of a MiG-21 on July 28 near Barmer in which two fighter pilots were killed, reigniting the debate over the airworthiness of the aircraft based on a decades-old design.
