  • Pegasus row has erupted again in India after The New York Times reported that Modi government purchased the spyware in 2017. The report by NYT said that the spyware was purchased as part of a $2 billion defence deal between India and Israel. In July 2021, a consortium of media groups had released a report claiming that several governments around the world snooped on opponents, businessmen and journalists. Among the potential targets included Rahul Gandhi, Prashant Kishor and ex-Election Commission Ashok Lavasa and nearly 40 journalists. In October, the Supreme Court appointed a panel to probe the allegations of snooping. Meanwhile, Congress has hit out at the Modi government, accusing it of treason.
