Pope Francis' 'Putin's altar boy' remark makes Russian Orthodox Church fume

The Russian Orthodox Church scolded Pope Francis for his ‘Putin’s altar boy’ remarks. It cautioned the Vatican that such remarks would hurt dialogue between the churches. Pope Francis had urged Patriarch Kirill not to become Russian Prez Putin’s ‘altar boy’. Francis told Italy's Corriere Della Sera newspaper that he wanted to meet Putin to try to stop the war. He said Kirill who has given the Ukraine war his backing ‘cannot become Putin's altar boy’. The Kremlin said that there was no agreement on Pope Francis’ meeting with Putin in Moscow.
