Uttarakhand: Death toll climbs to 54; rescue operation underway | Updates

- Chamoli police said death toll due to Uttarakhand glacier burst rose to 54. The police recovered three more bodies from the Tapovan tunnel on February 15. Missing reports of over 170 people have been filed till now in Joshimath police station. ITBP, NDRF and the State Disaster Response Force are involved in the rescue operation. “Rescue operation is still underway. It is challenging to work in confined space. We are trained for such situations and morale is high within the jawans,” said National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Deputy Commandant Aditya Pratap Singh. A glacier burst in the Tapovan-Reni area of Chamoli District of Uttarakhand last week, which led to massive flooding in the Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers and damaged houses and the nearby Rishiganga power project.
