The Russian Defence Minister, Sergei Shoigu, had direct contact with the U.S. Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin, said the Putin administration. The two leaders "discussed the situation in Ukraine" over the phone. The Pentagon said that they emphasized the importance of maintaining lines of communication amid the ongoing conflict.
