Record submissions in Oscar foreign language category

This year, the submissions for the Foreign Language Oscar have been a record 83, seven more than what it was last year. These submissions have come from countries that have never before been in the Oscars race -- Kosovo, Malta, Mauritania and Panama.

One of the most remarkable titles has been Turkey's Winter Sleep, a Cannes Palm d'Or winner. Another Turkish film, Little Happiness, is UK's official submission.We then have Ireland's crime thriller The Gift, Australia's Charlie's Country (about an aging Aborigine), Belgium's Two Days One Night, Poland's Ida and Philippines' Norte, The End of History, inspired by Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment that runs for 250 minutes.

This year, Italy's The Great Beauty, the portrait of an aging social butterfly, won the Best Foreign Language Oscar. Italy holds the record number of wins in this category - 14 since the introduction of this section in 1947.
