At least six people were killed after a bus rammed into a crowd at bus stop queue in central Stockholm on Friday.

“There were six casualties in the incident,” read a CNN report quoting a spokesperson for Stockholm’s rescue services as saying, without giving the numbers of those killed or those injured.

An official said it was a “serious incident”, adding several people were injured in the accident as it occurred during the afternoon rush hour, news agency AFP reported citing police officials.
“There are both injured and deceased people in the incident. Police are for the moment not commenting on the number, gender or ages of the victims,” said a police statement.
What had happened?
At around 3.23 pm on Friday, authorities were alerted about the crash into a bus shelter on Valhallavägen, a street in the Swedish capital’s Östermalm district, in the northern part of the city, near the Royal Institute of Technology.
Police, who are treating the crash as “involuntary manslaughter” did not clarify on the immeediate cause of the accident. Further investigation is underway.

Emergency services said the vehicle, a regular city bus, was not in service and that no passengers were on board.
“We currently have five victims, two of whom are seriously injured and have been taken to hospital,” Sweden's TT news reported quoting a spokesperson for the Stockholm region, Michelle Marcher as saying.
Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson wrote on X he had “received the tragic news that several people have been killed and injured at a bus stop ... People who were perhaps on their way home to family, friends, or a quiet evening at home.”

He said that “we do not yet know the cause of this, but right now my thoughts are primarily with those who have been affected and their families.”
