What will Ukraine's Zelensky do on 1st anniversary of Russia's February invasion

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky wishes to visit the United Nations to address a high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the eve of the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of his country, a senior foreign ministry official told Associated Press. First deputy foreign minister Emine Dzhaparova said that this could only be possible if the security situation permits.

The official also said that many factors need to be in place for Zelensky to come, most importantly the military situation on the ground and a warning from Ukraine’s intelligence service that Russia is planning “a very serious offensive in February.”

“Our president would want to come, he has a will or intention to come but it’s still a question if there will be a security situation that will allow him to come," Emine Dzhaparova said adding that Ukraine would like to see the assembly adopt one of the two resolutions that Zelensky wants to see approved on the eve of the anniversary of the invasion.

If the visit takes place, it will mark Zelensky's second trip outside Ukraine since the February 24, 2022 invasion. Earlier, the Ukrainian president made a surprise visit to Washington on December 21 and thanked US president Joe Biden and members of Congress for their support.

Ukraine’s UN ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya said the General Assembly has already scheduled a high-level debate on the Ukraine war on February 23.

“We have to act step by step. It’s still a question what will be the first. … I believe that this is something that we will know very soon, in the nearest week or two," Emine Dzhaparova said.

“It’s about shaping the discourse,” she further said.
