Scotland Yard said on Friday it was considering opening an investigation into recent revelations about drugs and male escorts involving senior Labour MP Keith Vaz, who this week resigned as chair of an influential parliamentary committee.
In an expose, the Sunday Mirror had reported Vaz’s encounter with male prostitutes at his London flat in August.
In a statement, Scotland Yard said: “Following allegations in the Sunday Mirror on Sunday, 4 September concerning a member of Parliament, the Met Police can confirm a letter was received on Wednesday, 7 September requesting police consider the matter.
“The letter has been forwarded to the Met’s special inquiry team, part of Specialist Crime and Operations, to assess and identify what criminal offences – if any – may have been committed. At this stage a police investigation has not been launched.”
Goa-origin Vaz has been the MP of Leicester East since 1987. He resigned on Tuesday as chairman of the influential Home Affairs Committee of Parliament following the sting operation.
The Sunday Mirror had published pictures that it said showed Vaz, 59, with male sex workers, while illegal drugs were mentioned during a secretly recorded conversation.
