As Britain woke up to a hung parliament on Friday, newspaper front pages across the country reflected the shock and confusion. May had declared the election early, hoping to get a stronger mandate for Brexit negotiations, but she ended up losing the majority in Parliament.

Here is how 8 newspaper front pages across the UK broke the news:

1) Daily Mail : Britain’s leading tabloid splashed the backfiring of Theresa May’s election gamble on its front page.

On Thursday, just ahead of the verdict, the paper had made this appeal to the voters:

3) Daily Mirror: The Mirror tried to come to terms with Corbyn’s sudden change in fortunes. Cor Blimey is English slang for ‘God blind me’, an exclamation of surprise and shock.

4) Daily Star: The Star also went ahead with a suitably apocalyptic headline screaming across its front page.

5) Metro: The Metro’s headline was a testament to how Jeremy Corbyn, once reviled even within the Labour ranks for his left-leaning ideology, has emerged as the hero of this election turnaround.

6) The Times: The British institution spelt out what was on the minds of most people.

7) The Independent: The newspaper’s front page summed up the current political mood in the country.

8) The Scotsman: The 200-year old paper went for ‘Mayday, mayday’, reflecting the panic in May’s camp.
