Fourteen Afghans, including women and children, were killed and 40 hurt when a truck plunged off a mountain road into a valley in rugged northeastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, the government said.

President Hamid Karzai ordered military helicopters to the scene of the accident in Badakhshan province to evacuate the casualties, a statement from his office said.

"Fourteen people including women and children were killed and 40 others injured," it said.
