5.4 magnitude quake shakes Afghanistan

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake rattled the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan early today, the US Geological Survey reported.

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake rattled the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan early on Saturday, the US Geological Survey reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quake that hit at 1:02 a m on Saturday (2032 Friday GMT).

No tsunami alerts were issued.

The quake was deep, some 199.1 kilometers below the surface, the USGS said. The USGS said the quake hit was about 74 kilometers southeast of Faizabad, Afghanistan, and 254 kilometers northeast of Kabul.
