The quake struck at 12:42 pm (0542 GMT), 44 kilometres (27.3 miles) southeast of Sinabang at a depth of 37 kilometres, according to the agency.

Seismologists at the United States Geological Survey said the quake was measured 5.9 in magnitude.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "ring of fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
