"It's an important moment in time because this is the first time we put together all of the elements of the president's new strategy," US national security adviser James Jones said.
The offensive kicked off before dawn Saturday with 15,000 US, British and Afghan soldiers storming an Islamist stronghold in the town of Marjah.
"I think we are obviously in the initial phase, but it's going very well," Jones said in an interview on CNN's State of the Union program.
Jones stressed that Obama's new strategy, that included sending 30,000 additional US troops to Afghanistan, involved bringing together "not only security operations but also follow economic recovery packages (and) better governance at the local and regional level."
