Disgraced nuclear scientist A Q Khan, currently engaged in a legal battle with the Pakistan government over restrictions on his movements, today claimed that he could produce enough electricity to meet Pakistan’s energy needs.
"With a small investment, I can produce electricity in a few months that will meet the shortfall for good," Khan said, but was quick to add that the government perhaps did not want to hire his services.
"I want to serve my nation but the government does not allow me," he said.
Speaking to a delegation from the Khaksaar Tehrik group here, the scientist said he had no "political agenda" and was not interested in forming a pressure group.
"I want to lead an apolitical life but at the same time, I am desirous of helping my nation in issues like load-shedding," he said.
Life across Pakistan has been affected by crippling power outages.
The gap between demand and supply recently soared to 5,000 MW, forcing the government to resort to load-shedding for up to eight hours in cities and 16 hours in villages.
"If the government allows me, I can not only produce electricity for the people of my country but we can generate enough power to sell to neighbouring countries," Khan said.
