Bangladesh has reported its second swine flu death with a 20-year-old youth succumbing to the disease while the number of people who tested positive for the deadly H1N1 virus has risen to 281 across the country.
The Directorate General of Health Services said last night that labourer Abdus Sobhan Safor had died of swine flu at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was brought in with severe respiratory complication.
The statement came four days after the first swine flu death was confirmed by the authorities when a 35-year-old woman died at a private facility in Dhaka.
Six more people were overnight tested positive for H1N1 virus, raising the number of such patients to 281 across the country.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said that it would provide all necessary assistance to Bangladesh in preventing the spread of swine flu virus as its Executive Director Margaret Chan called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the sidelines of a climate conference in Switzerland yesterday.
Chan suggested the Premier keep Bangladesh's health workers and security agencies' members sound on priority basis for the interest of keeping the common people safe from attack of the virus, a spokesman of the Prime Minister's office said.
