The Pakistani army says a roadside bomb has killed three soldiers and wounded six more near a Taliban militant stronghold in the northwest.

An army spokesman says the blast hit a military convoy on Friday evening as it drove away from the Swat valley.

The spokesman requested anonymity in line with military policy. Pakistan's military has vowed to reinvigorate its efforts in Swat, where fighting has been raging the last 18 months. Taliban guerrillas have destroyed nearly 200 girls schools, driven out moderate community leaders and set up their own courts in a bid to impose Islamic law in the valley.
The valley is separate from the tribal regions along the Afghan border where Taliban and al-Qaida militants also find sanctuary.
