A brother of a heavily armed policeman, dismissed from the service has asked him for an extension of 30 minutes against a 3 p.m. (0700 GMT) deadline he set.
Gregorio Mendoza, a senior police officer, was overheard by reporters while talking by mobile phone to his brother who has taken mostly foreigners hostage aboard a tourist bus in central Manila.
