US President George W Bush's approval rating sunk to a new low of 26 per cent, dragged down by Iraqi war and people's dissatisfaction with the way he is handling major issues across the board, a new poll shows.

The latest Newsweek poll, conducted on Monday and Tuesday, found that only one in four approve of the way he is doing his job while a 65 per cent disapprove.

An interesting aspect is that one third among those who disapprove are Republicans, the party to which the 43rd President belongs.

The rating dropped two points since the last week and statistically, it remains unchanged, considering the 4 point margin of error.

But the new rating is less than that of former President Jimmy Carter who at his nadir had 28 per cent approval rating. But it is slightly above than that of Richard Nixon whose rating had tumbled to 23 points in January 1974, seven months before he resigned amidst Watergate scandal.

In the scariest news for the Democratic candidates seeking their party's nomination in 2008, even rank-and-file Democrats are unhappy with Congress, which is narrowly controlled by their party.

Only 27 per cent of Democrats approve of the job Congress is doing, a statistically insignificant difference from the 25 per cent of Republicans and 25 per cent of independents who approve of Congress.
