A Canadian soldier was killed on Monday in Afghanistan, the 90th to die in the Canadian mission there, the ministry of defense said.

The soldier, a corporal, was killed in Panjwayi district in the southern province of Kandahar when insurgents attacked his post using grenade launchers and light weapons, the ministry said in a statement.
One soldier was wounded in the attack but is expected to survive.
Another Canadian was killed over the weekend in a firefight, also in Kandahar province. According to Canadian media reports, he may have been shot by members of a private security group operating in the same area at the time.
The Canadian military has opened an investigation into his death.
Canada maintains a contingent of 2,500 soldiers in the Kandahar region as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
Ninety Canadian soldiers and a Canadian diplomat have died since the mission arrived in Afghanistan in 2002.
