An alleged new year's day suicide attack on Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan was foiled when the troops killed the driver of the explosive-laden vehicle.

Soldiers were on a bomb-sweeping patrol north of Kandahar city of the war ravaged country when a Toyota Land Cruiser pulled out from a blockade and raced at them, a media report said on Friday quoting a Canadian forces spokesperson.
The soldiers repeatedly warned the driver to stop before opening fire. They found three large explosives - two 250-kilogrammes and one 100-kilogrammes Russian aircraft bombs when they searched the vehicle, he said.
Roughly six soldiers were on the ground at the time, and others were in vehicles. A second vehicle sped toward the patrol a short time later. Soldiers fired on the second vehicle, wounding the driver, when it failed to heed warning sign, he added.
