"Already on the plane, on the runway at Jose Marti (International Airport). Bound for the Venezuelan Fatherland! With more optimism than ever! We will live and we will overcome," Chavez wrote on his Twitter account @chavezcandanga on Friday.

Sources in the Venezuelan presidency confirmed that he was on his way back to Venezuela.

Chavez has been in Havana since May 1, an absence that has sent rumors flying about his health.

Interior minister Tareck El Aissami fueled the speculation after saying Tuesday that the Venezuelan President would return in "the coming hours," which then did not happen.

Chavez, 57, has undergone surgery twice in the past year to remove cancerous tumors, and has had chemotherapy followed by radiation treatments to try to rid himself of the cancer.
