China supports the UN in carrying out reforms and playing an increasingly more important role in international affairs, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said replying to questions on the appointment of Khare.

"China appreciates and supports Ban's efforts to enhance the construction of the UN reform mechanism," Hong said, adding that Beijing will "continue to support the UN in carrying out reforms to improve efficiency, enhance authority and play a more important role in international affairs".

On Tuesday, Khare had been appointed by UN chief Ban Ki-moon to head the Change Management Team (CMT) tasked with suggesting reforms to make the global organisation work more efficiently.

52-year-old Khare, who has also served as the Assistant Secretary-General for UN Peacekeeping Operations, will lead the CMT which will guide the implementation of a forward-looking reform agenda.
