Clashes leave 31 dead, 230 injured

At least 31 people have died and 230 injured in the Thai capital, Bangkok, during three days of violent clashes between troops and anti-government protesters.

At least 31 people have died and 230 injured in the Thai capital, Bangkok, during three days of violent clashes between troops and anti-government protesters.

The violence has claimed 61 lives and injured about 1,700 people since mass demonstrations began in Bangkok in mid-March, according to figures from the Erawan emergency centre and the public health ministry.

Meanwhile, the government insisted that a crackdown on protesters would continue despite their plea for UN-mediated talks to end four days of clashes. A pause by the Thai military was unnecessary since troops were “not using weapons to crack down on civilians,” said a government spokesman. He added that the government was only targeting armed “terrorists”.
