The request was made in the form of a personal plea to Prime Minister Stephen Harper during a high-profile meeting at his Parliament Hill office on Monday.

"Please take a few thousand more," Dalai Lama said after thanking Harper for previously accepting 4,000 Tibetan refugees.

The Chinese government, however, denounced the meeting and labeled it as "disgusting."

Around 100,000 Tibetan refugees now live in northern India and Nepal after fleeing Tibet in 1959 owing to a failed uprising against Chinese rule.
