Shrien Dewani, an Indian-origin Briton who had a lavish ‘Bollywood-style’ marriage in Mumbai before going on honeymoon to Cape Town where his wife Anni was killed in 2010, was due to be flown to South Africa later on Monday to face trial.
Dewani, 34, who lost legal bids to block his extradition to South Africa, is accused of arranging the murder of Anni, 28, on their honeymoon, in November 2010 as the couple travelled in a taxi through the Gugulethu township.
During protracted legal hearing, Dewani’s lawyers had argued that he should not be forced from the UK to face trial until he had recovered from mental health problems including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The arguments, however, were rejected.
As the millionaire Dewani’s prepared for his extradition, Anni’s family today welcomed the development, saying it brought the prospect of justice a “step closer”.
Anish Hindocha, Anni’s brother, said there were “so many different” questions to be answered.Appearing on British television this morning wearing Anni’s picture attached with a pink ribbon to his jacket, Hindocha spoke of the “nightmare” her family have endured over the past three years.
He said: “It has been very difficult for my family. We are just focusing on this case at the moment and it is hard to even start making the grieving process final yet because there are so many questions we need answers to”.
