A diamond necklace worth about Rs 1 million was stolen from The Indian Show exhibition at the Expo Centre in Lahore on Sunday, police said.

Indian trader Kamal Khan of ND Diamonds told police that while a large number of people were visiting his stall, a woman aged between 30 and 35 years asked a salesperson to show her a necklace.

While examining the necklace, she pretended she was feeling faint. "The staff helped her and in the meanwhile, her male accomplice stole the necklace worth about Rs 1 million," Khan said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Jahanzeb Khan said a case had been registered at the request of Kamal Khan.

He said: "We have collected the CCTV footage but unfortunately it does not show the ND Diamonds' stall. However, we are going to issue sketches of the couple that were prepared on the information provided by the stall owner," he said.

The police officer said the couple involved in the incident were probably swindlers.

At least 30,000 people on Sunday visited the exhibition, which was inaugurated by Pakistan’s commerce minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim on Satrurday. The India Show is the largest ever India-specific trade exhibition held in Pakistan.

India's Commerce Minister Anand Sharma is arriving in Lahore through the Wagah land border tomorrow with a large trade delegation on a three-day visit to Pakistan.

He will hold talks with his Pakistani counterpart to normalise bilateral trade relations and participate in the closing ceremony for the exhibition.
