Edinburgh airport to reopen after package scare

The Edinburgh aiport was on Tuesday evacuated and closed after a suspicious package was discovered in the security area, leading to several inbound and outbound flight cancellations with passengers on some landed flights not allowed to leave the aircraft.

After investigating the package belonging to a passenger, officials said it posed “no threat”. The airport was scheduled to reopen around 6 pm GMT.

Police Scotland confirmed that the incident at the airport following the discovery of the suspicious bag had been resolved.

Chief Inspector David Campbell from Police Scotland's Border Policing Command said: "As part of a routine bag search at the airport, suspicions were raised about the contents of one item of hand luggage and the decision was taken to evacuate the airport while the appropriate enquiries could be carried out”.

He added: "We are now satisfied there isn't, nor was there ever, any risk to the public and the airport will now begin to reopen. We would like to thank the public for their patience and co-operation during the emergency service response."
