The train, laden with sugarcane, failed to see the lorry due to dense fog at the level crossing near Jamalpur, 120 kilometres (75 miles) north of Dhaka, police inspector Anwarul Haq said. There was also no barricade.

"Five people died on the spot while three more died on the way to hospital. Ten others were hospitalised in a critical condition," he said.

Railway officials have recently blamed faulty signal equipment and a lack of barricades at level crossings for increasing numbers of accidents involving trains and other vehicles.
