Fonseka found guilty of corruption

A second court martial has found former army chief and war hero Sarath Fonseka guilty of corruption, it was announced on Friday.

A second court martial has found former army chief and war hero Sarath Fonseka guilty of corruption, it was announced on Friday.

The court martial indicted him for his alleged involvement in corrupt deals in procuring arms and equipment during his tenure as army chief, by favouring an arms company run by his son-in-law. He was found guilty of “disgraceful conduct” for not following tender procedures. AFP quoted an anonymous military source, saying that Fonseka, 59, could be jailed for three years.

A spokesperson said the quantum of sentence has been recommended to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who, as the commander in chief of the armed forces, must approve the sentence. In August, another court martial had stripped him of his uniform for dabbling in politics while still army chief.
