"It's not clear that there's that much more left to say" as last week's Group of 20 financial summit in Pittsburgh addressed all relevant issues concerning how to address the current global crisis, the official told reporters.
"This issue is under debate and I'm sure you'll find out in a few days whether we have a communique or not," the official said on Wednesday on condition of anonymity.
The official also sidestepped a question of whether there will be no more talks of G-7 finance ministers and central bankers after Saturday's meeting in the Turkish city.
"The G-7 has remained a valuable and useful format of finance minister and central bank governors" even with the creation of the Group of Eight and the G-20, the official said.
"We look forward to continued consultation and consensus-building with our G-7 partners," the official said, in reference to Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
At their Pittsburgh summit, G-20 leaders decided to turn the G-20 into the "premier" forum for international economic cooperation in place of the G-7 and G-8.
