Clashes erupted on the fringes of a large protest march outside the G20 summit in Toronto on Sunday, as hardline protesters set fire to a police car and scuffled with riot officers.

While the bulk of the 10,000-strong rally marched peacefully, masked and black-clad anti-globalism protesters emerged from the crowd to attack police vehicles, an AFP reporter at the scene saw.

In addition to the patrol car that was set ablaze, at least three more were damaged in downtown Toronto's financial district, and the air was thick with the smell of vinegar-soaked rags used to ward off police tear gas.
