Ihab Ghussein, spokesman for the Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry, said the explosion was caused by an Israeli airstrike. But the claim could not be verified.

He said that the 27-year-old man killed in the blast had been armed, though it was unclear to which militant group he belonged.

The Israeli military, which usually claims responsibility for its attacks, had no immediate comment. The army often strikes at targets in Gaza, though it has largely scaled back activity in recent months.
