Hu Jintao re-elected CPC Chief for second term

Chinese President Hu Jintao is re-elected on Monday as the General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) for a second term till 2012.

Chinese President Hu Jintao was re-elected on Monday as the General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) for a second term till 2012, signalling political stability and continuity in the world's most populous nation.

Hu won the fresh mandate from the newly elected CPC's 17th Central Committee after its first plenum here this morning.

The 64-year old Hu will now concurrently hold the position as head of state, head of party and commander in chief of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Members of the newly elected Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 17th CPC Central Committee, the top-decision making body are: Hu Jintao, Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang.

A beaming Hu introduced his old and new colleagues to the media, who had been waiting since early morning at the ornate Great Hall of the People to see the new Chinese leadership line-up.
