A severely burnt woman lawmaker belonging to Nepal’s Maoist party was on Saturday airlifted to New Delhi following request from her party seeking India’s help.
“We had received a formal letter from the UCPN (Maoist) seeking help for treatment of the injured Constituent Assembly member,” said an official of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.
An air ambulance was sent from New Delhi on Saturday and the patient taken to Safdarjung Hospital for specialized treatment of her burn injuries.
Ram Kumari Devi Yadav, 55, sustained burn injuries at her rented house in Kathmandu on the early hours of Friday due to a fire caused by a leaking LPG cylinder.
The lawmaker had gone to the kitchen to inspect the cause of the leaking cylinder and had switched on a light which triggered the fire.
She was immediately rushed to Kantipur Hospital from where she was shifted to Bir Hospital for treatment.
“The lawmaker has sustained 75 percent burn injuries,” The Himalayan Times quoted Dr Bulan Thapa, Director, Bir Hospital.
Maoists in Nepal who are trying to regain power have been blaming India for most ills besieging the Himalayan nation.
