Indian maid charged with stealing cash, jewellery

An Indian maid working in Singapore has been charged with stealing cash and valuables worth over 400,000 Singaporean dollars from her employer, a media report said.

An Indian maid working in Singapore has been charged with stealing cash and valuables worth over 400,000 Singaporean dollars from her employer, a media report said.

Kirandeep Kaur, 25, allegedly stole S$31,000 in assorted currencies including Australian and US dollars, as well as a diamond bangle woth S$22,000 along with other valuables from the apartment of her employer Vandana Gupta, The Straits Times reported.

Kaur, however, has pleaded not guilty saying she did not take that much money and everything had been returned.

"My employer is trying to place all the blame on me," she told district judge Lim Tse Hwa through a Punjabi interpreter, the report said.

Kaur has been remanded until her next appearance in court on November 2.

If found guilty and convicted, she could be jailed for up to seven years and fined.
