The US military said on Friday Iraq's entire 5th Army Corps had surrendered in the northern city of Mosul.
"The commander of the Iraqi 5th Corps communicated it to people on the ground," Captain Frank Thorp, spokesman at US Central Command war headquarters in Qatar, said.
"We're in the process of deciding whether they will become EPWs (enemy prisoners of war) or just go home."
Lieutenant Mark Kitchens said US forces had met resistance in the northern town of Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's home base.
"What we're seeing in Tikrit is the same type of aggressive engagement we saw in Baghdad. We're aggressively attacking the enemy and shaping the battlefield," he said, making clear he was referring to air strikes.
