Journalists are the most active people on Twitter, says latest report

According to a new report based on 15,000 verified Twitter accounts, journalists make up nearly a quarter — nearly 24.6 per cent — of the authenticated Twitter users.

According to a new report based on 15,000 verified Twitter accounts, journalists make up nearly a quarter — nearly 24.6 per cent — of the authenticated Twitter users.

The next largest category is sports teams and athletes (around 17.9 per cent), followed by actors and entertainers (13.6 per cent), said a report by Britain-based start-up Triggertrap.

According to Haje Jan Kamps, CEO of Triggertrap, news organisations and journalists tweet frequently about the content they produce and consume. “Verified journalists follow more users on average compared to other verified groups in the Twitterverse,” the report added.

Recently, in a storm of tweets, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey celebrated the social network’s ninth birthday by thanking reporters and editors who helped turn the micro-blogging site from a stream of 140-character updates to a ‘river of news and commentary’.

“So many around the world have helped make Twitter what it is, but there’s one group I’d like to thank today: journalists,” he had tweeted earlier this month.

“After the tech early-adopters, journalists were the next to take to Twitter. They used it as a source, to break news, and to link their work,” he added.
