An earthquake measuring 5.9 magnitude struck off Vanuatu, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no immediate warning of a tsunami.

An earthquake measuring 5.9 magnitude struck off Vanuatu on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said, but there was no immediate warning of a tsunami.

The undersea tremor, which was 90 kilometres (60 miles) deep, hit 464 kilometres northwest of the country's second city Luganville on the island of Espiritu Santo at 4:26 pm (0526 GMT), according to the USGS.

There were no reports of casualties.
